Nueva visión ecológica en tiempo de crisis. Discursos de permacultores en Sicilia (Italia)

Abstract

Se presentan los resultados de una investigación social realizada en Sicilia (Italia) sobre comunidades neorrurales surgidas durante la pandemia de COVID-19 como desafío a las crisis del nuestro tiempo. El objetivo es comprender las motivaciones por las que estos/estas neorrurales han abandonado la “comodidad” de la ciudad para trasladarse al campo, y cómo se están organizando en su nueva vida. La etnografía se desarrolló mediante trabajo de campo, observación participante, 10 entrevistas semiestructuradas y un cuestionario abierto. Los resultados muestran una aceleración del modelo neorrural durante la pandemia, con la transformación de la ya existente red de permacultura en Sicilia en un movimiento social en junio de 2020. Entre los participantes hay profesionales de agronomía, biología, informática o educación, que ahora se integran activamente en comunidades denominadas “nodos locales” (redes de apoyo mutuo dentro del movimiento). Este estudio pretende centrarse en este tipo de ruralidad organizada según proyectos específicos frente a otros tipos de neorruralidad. Este movimiento de permacultura en Sicilia persigue objetivos como el eco-regionalismo, la prevención de incendios, la conservación de semillas, la educación medioambiental, teniendo por misión proteger y regenerar la biodiversidad de la isla, implementar la economía circular comunitaria y contrarrestar el creciente proceso de desertificación

The results of a social research conducted in Sicily on neo-rural communities that emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic as a challenge to the crises of our time are presented. The aim of this qualitative research is to understand the motivations why these neo-rural people have left the “comfort” of the city to move to the countryside, and how they are organising themselves in their new life. The ethnography was developed through fieldwork, participant observation, 10 semi-structured interviews and an open questionnaire. The results show an acceleration of the neo-rural model during the pandemic, with the transformation of the existing permaculture network in Sicily into a social movement in June 2020. Among the participants are professionals in agronomy, biology, informatic or education, who are now actively integrated in communities called “local nodes” (mutual support networks into the movement). This study aims to focus on this type of rurality organised according to specific designs and projects as opposed to other types of neo-rurality. This permaculture movement in Sicily pursues objectives such as ecoregionalism, energy self-sufficiency, fire prevention, seed conservation, environmental education, with the mission to protect and regenerate the island's biodiversity, implement the community circular economy and counteract the growing process of desertification.
