Grabados europeos y biombos novohispanos: reflexiones entre lo global y lo local

Abstract

El artículo aborda la circulación de grabados entre Europa y América en la Edad Moderna y su relación con los programas iconográficos de los biombos mexicanos. El análisis de los biombos conservados permite identificar la adaptación a su superficie de esta fuente artística. De esta forma, se analizan los cambios que cada pintor decidió introducir a la hora de adaptar grabados desde una perspectiva que combina lo global con lo local. Por otra parte, es posible suponer que los comendadores de los biombos tuvieron un papel relevante en la elección de los grabados, lo que permite interrogarse por sus gustos e inquietudes.

The article addresses the circulation of engravings between Europe and the Americas during the Early Modern period and their relationship with the iconographic programs of Mexican folding screens. The analysis of the preserved folding screens allows for the identification of how this artistic source was adapted to their surfaces. The changes each painter chose to introduce when adapting engravings are analyzed from a perspective that combines both global and local viewpoints. Additionally, it is possible to suggest that the commissioners of the folding screens played a significant role in the selection of the engravings, raising questions about their tastes and concerns.
