Ensayo sobre la permanente búsqueda de una identidad mexicana

Abstract

En 1810 inició en México el proceso de independencia de España, que había existido como virreinato de Nueva España desde la «Toma de Tenochtitlan». El objetivo de este trabajo es hacer una breve reflexión acerca de cómo, desde ese momento, se fue desarrollando la construcción de la identidad mexicana a través de las polémicas que todavía suscitan los orígenes del México actual. Con algún antecedente virreinal, es tras la independencia cuando se comenzó a buscar la identidad de la nueva nación poniendo el foco en las culturas prehispánicas. En el siglo XX se amplió la mirada reconociendo la aportación otros periodos y de los diferentes grupos humanos de México, incluidos junto a los indígenas, los criollos y mestizos. Se estudia la invención a principios de ese siglo del arte neocolonial como símbolo identitario y su adopción desde el poder del México posrevolucionario como arte oficial, tanto en la arquitectura, como en la imagen urbana y en los interiores, coexistiendo con las artes plásticas de la Escuela Mexicana dedicadas al muralismo y la gráfica neoindigenista. Finalmente se analiza como en los últimos tiempos la búsqueda de una identidad mexicana ha avivado en la sociedad el debate en torno a la conquista, su significado y su relación con lo que hoy se pretende reconocer como estrictamente mexicano.

In 1810, the process of independence from Spain began in Mexico, which had existed as a Virreinato de Nueva España since the "Toma de Tenochtitlan". The objective of this work is to make a brief reflection on how, from that moment on, the construction of the Mexican identity developed through the controversies that still arise regarding the origins of present-day Mexico. With some vice regal antecedents, it was after independence that the search for the identity of the new nation began, focusing on pre-Hispanic cultures. In the 44 IMAGO CRÍTICA 10 (2024) 20th century, the view was broadened, recognizing the contribution of other periods and of the different human groups of Mexico, including, along with the indigenous people, the Creoles and the mestizos. The invention of neocolonial art as an identity symbol at the beginning of that century is studied, as well as its adoption by the power of post-revolutionary Mexico as official art, both in architecture and in urban image and interiors, coexisting with the plastic arts of the Mexican School dedicated to muralism and neoindigenist graphics. Finally, it is analyzed how in recent times the search for a Mexican identity has revived the debate in society about the conquest, its meaning and its relationship with what is now claimed to be strictly Mexican.
