La Capilla Real de Granada como escenario del poder. La colocación del segundo sepulcro (1603)

Abstract

A lo largo del siglo XVI se suceden dos tentativas para colocar el sepulcro de Felipe de Austria y Juana de Castilla en el crucero de la Capilla Real de Granada, donde hasta entonces sólo estaba ubicado el de los Reyes Católicos. Los dos intentos fallidos cristalizaron finalmente en tiempos de Felipe III con la colocación en 1602 del segundo sepulcro en paralelo al anterior. Si el proceso se dilató en el tiempo fue debido a los intereses representativos de la Corona y de las instituciones granadinas en conflicto, especialmente entre el Real Acuerdo, la ciudad y la propia Capilla. La rica documentación de archivo conservada al respecto permite evaluar la importancia concedida a los símbolos de la monarquía en una ciudad periférica y su instrumentalización en conflictos institucionales, de gran relevancia para una ciudad a la que precisamente estas instituciones vinculadas a la Corona elevaban de rango. El proceso concluye con una reordenación funcional y espacial del crucero de la Capilla Real, habiendo tenido que mediar el propio rey. Las soluciones técnicas y criterios estéticos manejados durante las labores de colocación del sepulcro, labrado por Ordóñez ocho décadas atrás, ilustran la importancia simbólica que atesoraba este espacio, convertido en escenario de conflicto. En cierto modo, el laberinto cortesano se reproducía en la periferia.

Throughout the 16th century, two successive attempts were made to install the sepulcher of Philip of Austria and Joanna of Castile in the transept of the Royal Chapel of Granada, where, until then, only that of the Catholic Monarchs had been situated. These two failed endeavors finally reached fruition during the reign of Philip III, with the placement of the second tomb parallel to the first in 1602. The protracted nature of this process was due to the conflicting representative interests of the Crown and various Granadan institutions, most notably the Real Acuerdo (High Court), the City Council, and the Royal Chapel itself. The extensive archival documentation preserved on this matter allows for an assessment of the significance accorded to monarchical symbols in a peripheral city and their instrumentalization in institutional disputes—a matter of great relevance for a city whose status was elevated precisely by these Crown-linked institutions. The process concluded with a functional and spatial reorganization of the Royal Chapel’s transept, requiring the direct mediation of the King. The technical solutions and aesthetic criteria employed during the installation of the sepulcher, which had been carved by Ordóñez eight decades earlier, illustrate the symbolic importance of this space as it became a stage for conflict. In a sense, the labyrinth of the Court was reproduced on the periphery.
