Las catedrales en Hispanoamérica: Propuestas mudéjares

Abstract

Recuperar la importancia de las catedrales realizadas en el siglo XVI en América es el objetivo principal de este texto. Estos edificios respondieron al primer momento de la distribución geográfica de las diócesis en el nuevo mundo, siendo sustituidas por proyectos de carácter renacentista a partir del último cuarto del siglo XVI. No obstante, se conserva suficiente documentación para su valoración técnica y formal, así como ejemplos fundamentales para su análisis; concretamente las catedrales de Coro (Venezuela), Cartagena de Indias (Colombia) y Quito (Ecuador).

Recovering the importance of the cathedrals built in the 16th century in the Americas is the main objective of this text. These buildings corresponded to the initial phase of the geographical distribution of dioceses in the New World, being replaced by Renaissance-style projects beginning in the last quarter of the 16th century. However, sufficient documentation survives for their technical and formal assessment, as well as key examples for their analysis; specifically, the cathedrals of Coro (Venezuela), Cartagena de Indias (Colombia), and Quito (Ecuador).
