Oasis sudcalifornianos Para un rescate de la sustentabilidad local

Abstract

Es un concepto socioambiental que caracteriza la cultura de la naturaleza que a través de los siglos ha forjado la vida de los rancheros sudcalifornianos. La oasisidad nos remonta a los orígenes de la identidad regional, pero también a la construcción de una cultura cuyo rasgo distintivo fue la adaptación a un ambiente aparentemente ostil y ciertamente frágil. Por ello las formas de apropiación territorial y de uso de los recursos naturales se regían por intuitivos pero eficientes fundamentos de sustentabilidad. La historia de las relaciones sociedad/naturaleza de las ínsulas que salpican de verdor y vida la aridez sudcaliforniana, es la de hombres y mujeres que encontraron en la austeridad y la autosuficiencia los aliados fundamentales para su reproducción social. Los oasis adquieren en este sentido un valor histórico hasta ahora desatendido. Los oasis y a sus habitantes se les han impuesto retos a los que no han podido responder, condenándolos a una lenta agonía. La falta de comprensión e su valor ecohistórico ha ignarado la trascendencia de las actividades en ellos desarrolladas y el significado del modo de vida ancesrtral que éstas representan.

It is a socio-environmental concept that characterises the culture of nature that over the centuries has forged the lives of the ranchers of Southern California. Oasisity takes us back to the origins of regional identity, but also to the construction of a culture whose distinctive feature was the adaptation to an apparently hostile and certainly fragile environment. Therefore, the forms of territorial appropriation and the use of natural resources were governed by intuitive but efficient foundations of sustainability. The history of the society/nature relations of the islands that dot the arid Southcalifornian landscape with greenery and life is that of men and women who found in austerity and self-sufficiency the fundamental allies for their social reproduction. In this sense, the oases acquire a hitherto neglected historical value. The oases and their inhabitants have been challenged and have not been able to respond to these challenges, condemning them to a slow agony. The lack of understanding of their eco-historical value has ignored the transcendence of the activities carried out in them and the significance of the ancestral way of life they represent.
