“About the style and nothing but the style”: el Estilo Internacional y la Modern Architecture: International Exhibition de 1932

Abstract

Tras el 90 aniversario de la celebración en el MoMA de la exposición Modern Architecture: International Exhibition, ideada por Alfred H. Barr, Philip Johnson y Henry-Rusell Hitchcock, no cabe ninguna duda de su relevancia como episodio histórico en la arquitectura del siglo XX. Dicha exposición, junto con la publicación del libro International Style: Architecture since 1922, enunciaron los principios de un “Estilo Internacional” en arquitectura. Gran parte del debate y de la crítica arquitectónica del último siglo se han centrado en la conveniencia o no de esta codificación estilística y todas sus implicaciones. El presente artículo pretende analizar los hechos que dieron lugar a la realización de la Exposición de 1932, el impacto y la recepción de la misma en su tiempo y el recorrido de los principios fundamentales del “Estilo Internacional” hasta nuestros días. Todo ello a través de la relación con otros autores y textos, y mediante el análisis del cambio de opinión de sus propios promotores a lo largo del tiempo.

After the 90th anniversary of the MoMA’s Modern Architecture: International Exhibition, designed by Alfred H. Barr, Philip Johnson and Henry-Rusell Hitchcock, there can be no doubt of its relevance as a landmark episode in twentieth-century architecture. That exhibition, alongside the publication of the book International Style: Architecture since 1922, announced the principles of an “International Style” in architecture. A great part of the debate and architectural criticism in the last century has focused on the appropriateness of this stylistic codification and all its ramifications. This paper aims to analyse the events that led to the organisation of the 1932 Exhibition, the impact and reception of the event at the time, and the evolution of the fundamental principles of the “International Style” up to the present day. This is done through the relationship with other authors and texts, and by the analysis of the change of opinion of its promoters over time.
