La representación del espacio urbano a través de la fotografía. Estudio comparativo de la Plaza Mayor de Salamanca, Piazza Sordello en Mantua y Mountjoy Square en Dublín

Abstract

El espacio urbano es un sistema multidimensional en el cual se plasman los cambios políticos, socioeconómico y culturales de la sociedad. En las ciudades históricas, las plazas urbanas representan uno de estos elementos que testimonian las diferentes dimensiones del espacio a lo largo de la historia. En la presente contribución se pretende explorar, a través de una selección de fotografías producidas desde principios del siglo XX hasta hoy, la evolución de la representación de tres plazas históricas de gran valor arquitectónico si- tuadas en España, Italia e Irlanda, que han sido declaradas o incluidas en la lista indicativa de Patrimonio Mundial. Se analizan diacrónicamente tres lugares europeos que han sido testigos de remodelaciones urbanísticas diversas, a través del medio fotográfico y a lo largo de tres fases de evolución: las primeras representaciones de la iconización del espacio, las plazas como escenarios del progreso y la influencia del turismo, patrimonialización y gen- trificación urbana. Urban space is a multidimensional system in which the political, socio-economic and cultural changes of society take shape. In historic cities, urban squares represent one of these elements that testify the different dimensions of space throughout history. This contribution aims to explore, through a selection of photographs produced from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day, the evolution of the representation of three historic squares of great architectural value located in Spain, Italy and Ireland, which have been declared or included in the World Heritage Tentative List. Three European sites that have witnessed diverse urban redevelopments are analysed diachronically, using the photographic medium over three phases of evolution: the first representations of the iconisation of space, squares as stages of progress and the influence of tourism, patrimonialisation and urban gentrification.
