Tareas de un solitario: traducción o reescritura

Abstract

Una lectura de las cartas del escritor norteamericano Washington Irving lleva a la conclusión de que demostró muy poco interés por las traducciones que en Europa, y en particular en España, se hacían de sus obras. Este trabajo presenta al primer traductor del escritor norteamericano en España, Jorge Montgomery. Su objetivo fue introducir al lector español dos obras de Irving, Sketch Book y Tales of a Traveller de las que se sirvió para escribir Tareas de un Solitario. El análisis de esta obra descubre que no es una traducción si no más bien una imitación o reescritura de varios cuentos de Irving.

A reading of the letters of the American writer Washington Irving leads to the conclusion that he showed very little interest in the translations that were made of his works in Europe, and particularly in Spain. This work presents the first translator of Irving in Spain, Jorge Montgomery. His objective was to introduce the Spanish readers to two works by Irving, The Sketch Book and Tales of a Traveler. The analysis of his work, Tareas de un Solitario, reveals that it is not a translation but rather an imitation or rewriting of several stories by Irving.
