Vida del Almirante don Cristóbal Colón. Washington Irving en España (1833-1892)

Abstract

Este trabajo analiza la primera traducción que se hizo de la biografía de Colón que en 1828 publicó Washington Irving, Life and Voyages of Cristopher Columbus, y que inmediatamente se convirtió en un éxito editorial y literario tanto en América como en Europa. España no fue ajena a esta influencia y la primera traducción de la obra la hizo el impresor José Palacios en 1833. Su traductor fue José García de Villalta, obra que analizamos en profundidad y que sirve para entender la influencia que tuvo sobre otras biográficas que se hicieron del almirante y la proyección que tuvo sobre todo en los países hispanoamericanos que se encontraban inmersos en procesos de construcción identitario.

This work analyzes the first translation made of the biography of Columbus that Washington Irving published in 1828, Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus, and which immediately became an editorial and literary success both in America and Europe. Spain was not immune to this influence and the first translation of the work was made by the printer José Palacios in 1833. Its translator was José García de Villalta, a work that we analyzed in depth, and which serves to understand the influence it had on other biographies that were made of the admiral and the projection it had especially in Latin American countries that were immersed in processes of identity construction.
