Taphonomic approach to Fonelas P-1 site (late Upper Pliocene, Guadix basin, Granada): descriptive taphonomic characters related to hyaenid activity

Abstract

The Fonelas P-1 site in the Guadix Basin, Granada, dated to around 2 million years ago, offers a pivotal glimpse into the Late Upper Pliocene faunal assemblies and taphonomic processes influenced by hyaenid activities. The site's location within a floodplain of the axial system, characterized by dynamic fluvial interactions and sedimentary deposits, frames its importance. Stratigraphically, the site exhibits a series of fine upward-cycling sediments typifying a meandering river environment, which transition through phases from active fluvial channel to abandonment, thus capturing various faunal and environmental transitions.

Taphonomic analysis highlights the substantial role of hyenas as bioturbators and bone accumulators, crucial in understanding the site's paleoecological fabric. These analyses reveal that the sediments and faunal remains bear the signature of intense hyaenid scavenging activities, which reshaped the depositional and preservational context of the site. The interaction between these activities and the fluvial dynamics of the region provides unique insights into the behavior of hyenas and other carnivores within this late Pliocene ecosystem.

El yacimiento de Fonelas P-1, en la cuenca de Guadix (Granada), datado en unos 2 millones de años, ofrece una visión fundamental de los conjuntos faunísticos del Plioceno superior tardío y de los procesos tafonómicos influidos por las actividades de los hienos. La ubicación del yacimiento dentro de una llanura aluvial del sistema axial, caracterizada por interacciones fluviales dinámicas y depósitos sedimentarios, enmarca su importancia. Desde el punto de vista estratigráfico, el yacimiento presenta una serie de sedimentos finos de ciclo ascendente que tipifican un entorno fluvial meandriforme, que transita por fases desde el canal fluvial activo hasta el abandono, capturando así diversas transiciones faunísticas y medioambientales.

Los análisis tafonómicos ponen de relieve el importante papel de las hienas como bioturbadores y acumuladores de huesos, crucial para comprender el entramado paleoecológico del yacimiento. Estos análisis revelan que los sedimentos y los restos faunísticos llevan la firma de intensas actividades de carroñeo de hienas, que reconfiguraron el contexto deposicional y de preservación del yacimiento.
