La Exposición Universal de París de 1900. Fórmulas estéticas para una ciudad en fin de siglo

Abstract

Disertar sobre toda la Exposición Universal de París de 1900, último año del fin de siècle, en pocas páginas es una tarea extremadamente ambiciosa. Como señaló el periodista y diplomático argentino Manuel Ugarte en *Crónicas del bulevar*: "La Exposición no cabe en un artículo, es indispensable subdividirla". Abordar su completo significado y formulación teórica, estética, urbanística y cultural requeriría varios ensayos y un desarrollo multidisciplinario que escapa al alcance de este texto. El objetivo de estas líneas no es otro que esbozar algunos enfoques que han sido poco profundizados por la historiografía española y europea, a pesar de la abundante bibliografía existente sobre el tema. Este trabajo busca identificar las intenciones estéticas y estilísticas de una exposición que, aunque no fue la primera de su tipo en París, dejó una huella significativa.

Discussing the entirety of the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris, the final year of the fin de siècle, in just a few pages is an exceptionally ambitious undertaking. As the Argentine journalist and diplomat Manuel Ugarte remarked in Crónicas del bulevar: "The Exposition cannot be contained in one article; it must be divided." To fully explore its meaning and theoretical, aesthetic, urban, and cultural aspects would certainly require multiple essays and a significant interdisciplinary effort, which falls outside the scope of this work. The purpose here is not to cover the entire subject but to highlight certain angles that have not been thoroughly addressed in Spanish and European historiography, despite the vast amount of literature on the topic. This text aims to pinpoint the aesthetic and stylistic goals of an exhibition that, although not the first of its kind in Paris, left a lasting impact.
