El tópico del “soprepujamiento” en la poesía neolatina lepantina

Abstract

La victoria de la Santa Liga ante los turcos en la batalla de Lepanto (1571) produjo un gran impacto en la literatura del Renacimiento de la Europa mediterránea. Como en los clásicos, las fronteras entre poesía y retórica se diluyen, pues los poetas emplean mecanismos de origen retórico para vituperar y, sobre todo, elogiar a los protagonistas de este hito histórico. En este artículo analizamos el empleo del tópico del sobrepujamiento (“Überbietung”) en la poesía neolatina conmemorativa de la batalla de Lepanto, y enjuiciamos su importancia como uno de los elementos fundamentales de la naturaleza predominantemente panegírica de estas composiciones.

The victory of the Holy League over the Turks in the Battle of Lepanto (1571) had a great influence on the Renaissance literature of Mediterranean Europe. As in the Classics, the boundaries between poetry and rhetoric weakened and blurred, since the poets used in their works certain rhetoric devices in order to denounce and specially to praise the principal actors of this historic event. In this paper we analyze the employment of the literary topic known as “Überbietung” in Neo-Latin poetry in honour of the Battle of Lepanto and judge its significance as one of the most important elements of the primarily panegyric nature of these compositions.
