<title>Derivas: arte, ciudad y sociedad</title>
<link>https://hdl.handle.net/10481/111629</link>
<description>Derivas: arte, ciudad y sociedad
The URBS monographic issue on Dérives assembles texts from different sources and with different scopes of research or degrees of experimentation, depending on whether they are theoretical or empirical. They come from artistic, architectural and social disciplines, and span from recognized experts to simple amateurs who show interest in the subject. For this, all the sections of the journal have been made available to the project in a coordinated editorial effort that seeks a cross-section and adequate diffusion, reaching out from the spaces of academic debate to active society, covering artistic, urban and social areas. All the studies included acquire added value to the extent that they are complemented by the rest. This contextualization is decisive for understanding the idea of the whole in a choral sense that advances in collective processes of the construction of shared thought, although it could also be considered a process ‘à la dèrive’, in which we end up by constructing ourselves

<link>https://hdl.handle.net/10481/108594</link>
The Malaga-Cordoba-Granada railway (Southern Spain) was built between 1860 and 1874. A group of splendid metal bridges was included. They could be considered as an archetype of lattice girder bridges in Spain. This article describes and analyzes these remarkable works of Engineering. The attributes that distinguish them as early models of contemporary systems of Construction were focused.

<title>Arquetipos fundacionales en Metro 2033: estructuras territoriales y centros urbanos</title>
<link>https://hdl.handle.net/10481/108517</link>
<description>Arquetipos fundacionales en Metro 2033: estructuras territoriales y centros urbanos
Sánchez García, Manuel
La fundación de ciudades, práctica humana por antonomasia, se estructura mediante elementos específicos llamados arquetipos en las obras de autores reconocidos. Dichos autores plantean el problema de la ciudad contemporánea como metrópolis, un ente diferenciado de su gérmen histórico. Sin embargo, la producción de ficciones contemporáneas basadas en entornos urbanos fundacionales ofrece un campo de estudio que conecta la categorías urbanas de la antigüedad con el diseño de espacios narrativos interactivos. El análisis de la presencia de estas categorías en la obra Metro 2033, serie de novelas y videojuegos publicados entre 2002 y 2016 por Dmitri Glujvski, visibiliza el uso de arquetipos fundacionales para la estructuración de narraciones distópicas con alta carga política.; The act of founding cities, a most characteristic&#13;
human practice, responds to specific&#13;
archetypes which has been studies by recognized&#13;
authors. Their works consider the&#13;
problem of the contemporary city as a metropolis,&#13;
a construct well different from its&#13;
foundational historic core. However, nowadays&#13;
production of fiction narratives, based&#13;
on foundational urban contexts, offers a&#13;
field of research that connects ancient categories&#13;
with design of interactive fictional&#13;
spaces. The analysis of these categories in&#13;
the work Metro 2033 by Dmitri Glujvski, a series&#13;
of novels and video games published&#13;
between 2002 and 2016, shows the use of&#13;
foundational archetypes for the structuring&#13;
of dystopic narrations with strong political&#13;
messages

This article presents new visual and historiographical contributions regarding the 1570 foundational traza of Mancha Real, conserved at Granada’s Royal Chancery Archive as the single surviving graphic document from the new settlement project executed by the Castilian crown in Jaén’s Sierra Sur between 1508 and 1539. At its peak, this colonizing process was coordinated by Madrid-based judge Juan de Rivadeneyra between April and August 1539. He worked hand in hand with a commission of notaries, builders, and surveyors who applied urban practices parallel to those developed in Latin America since 1501. They were supported by a still young Juan de Reolid as the official plan tracer of the process. The foundational traza conserved today is a 1570 direct copy of Reolid’s work from 1539. Even though this copy does not adequately reproduce either Reolid’s calligraphy or his artistic gesture, it does feature the same graphic, cartographic, and notarial criteria applied in other latitudes of the Spanish Empire.

<title>French bridge engineering in Andalusia (1810-1900)</title>
<link>https://hdl.handle.net/10481/98948</link>
<description>French bridge engineering in Andalusia (1810-1900)
Burgos Núñez, Antonio
French engineering has had a great influence in Spain since the time of The Enlightenment, when the construction of public works was organized by the state as in France, according a centralist model.&#13;
Subsequently, throughout the 19th century, this presence intensified, there being a twofold increase in the transfer from France to Spain. In the field, Spanish engineers enthusiastically incorporated all of the scientific and technical knowledge created by their brilliant French colleagues (Navier, Vicat, Cauchy, Saint-Vénant,...).&#13;
At the same time, the development of Spanish infrastructures (mainly railways) favoured the employment of French companies with their own engineers, who were directly in charge of building their constructions in Spain.&#13;
In Andalusia, the southern region of the country, the construction of public works inspired by the French was particularly significant, especially in the field of bridges.&#13;
The first constructions were built at the time of the Napoleonic invasion and a bridge in the city of Granada dates from this period. A few decades later, French technicians were responsible for the arrival of the first suspension bridges, and there were also some significant creations from the period of experimentation in bridge design, such as the Polonceau system bridge built in Seville.&#13;
In the second half of the century, powerful French companies (Fives-Lille, Daydé &amp; Pillé) took over the deployment of the main railway lines in Andalusia. The difficult topography of the area forced the construction of numerous bridges and viaducts, many of them very complex. Necessity stimulated the ingenuity of the engineers who had implemented new models previously developed in France, in the region.&#13;
In the context of a transcendental period in the history of engineering, in which a profound evolution of forms and materials took place, these bridges in Andalusia were particularly important. Some of them were the first, and sometimes the only of their kind in Spain. They made a significant contribution to the dissemination of new construction techniques and to the consolidation of the use of rational design methods. The large metal viaducts, in particular, are some of the most representative works on the peninsula, both for their scale and for the application of complex engineering solutions.&#13;
The aim of this article is to study this tradition of French bridge building in Andalusia, paying special attention to the design techniques and construction procedures. It also aims to raise awareness of the valuable engineering heritage that originated during this historical period.
