Design and Evaluation of an Innovative Pedagogical Strategy for Undergraduate Medical Students Learning Chemistry

Training in chemistry is essential for undergraduate medical students; however, at the National University of Colombia, basic chemistry courses are associated with high fail rates and low academic performance with regard to first semester students, especially in vulnerable special admission populations. A longitudinal study was carried out via program evaluation methodology using quantitative and qualitative techniques to assess an innovative pedagogical strategy founded on context-based learning and different didactic and evaluative strategies employing information and communication technologies (ICT), which was tested on students of medicine by an interdisciplinary team of teachers in a new course. With the pedagogical strategy, a statistically significant improvement was observed in the academic performance of the students, with an increase in the mean grades that went from 3.61/5.00 to 3.95/5.00, a decrease of the fail rate from 15.50% to 3.48%, and the development of useful chemistry knowledge for the students during their training and for their professional lives. Furthermore, the study became an opportunity for collaborative learning among colleagues, favoring ongoing training of teaching staff and pedagogical innovation in professional learning communities.

It shows a study of the evolution of mental models on fossilization after the teaching and learning
process in students of 4th year of Secondary Education. Different teaching strategies are used, such as the
teacher's speech, argumentation in a large group, viewing videos, reading texts and using ICT resources. To
analyze the mental models of the students, before and after the teaching sequence, three variables are taken into
account: the geological processes involved, the space or geological environment where they are developed, and
the geological time. As a result, we observed that there is difficulty on the part of the students to integrate the
mineralization process of the organic matter or to associate the process with a concrete sedimentary
environment. At the same time wrong ideas parallel to previous studies are observed, in relation to considering
time as a factor of fossilization, as well as the asynchronism of the genesis of rocks and fossils they contain.

This article presents a review of the literature indexed in Scopus and Web of Science-Clarivate databases based on the analysis of bibliometric indicators on the use of Emerging Technologies in Education, considering those included in the “Horizon Report: K-12 Edition”; a) Makerspaces, b) Robotics, c) Analytics Technologies, d) Virtual Reality, e) Artificial Intelligence and f) The Internet of Things (IoT). In addition, they are considered as variable to be used in teaching of Science Education and STEM/STEAM Education in Secondary Education context. METHOD. The review is developed by using the flow for bibliometric studies proposed by Zupic and Čater (2015). A search was performed in Scopus and WoS based on an equation that gathers key terms of the three variables of analysis described. RESULTS. The main results obtained indicate that there is a notorious increase in scientific production on the topic, especially from 2017 onwards. In addition, a predominance of Immersive Technologies and Educational Robotics as the preferred technologies for the development of science education is observed. DISCUSSION. There is a predominance of “science education in particular” over STEM and STEAM approaches, however, a positive trend is observed related to the last two in the late part of the decade analyzed. On the other hand, it is observed that from 2018 onwards, scientific production regarding the use of emerging technologies has had an accelerated growth, with Virtual Reality and Robotics being the most used.; INTRODUCTION. DISCUSSION.
