<description>Analysis of the distribution of authorship by gender in scientific output: A global perspective
Sánchez-Jiménez, Rodrigo; Guerrero-Castillo, Pablo; Guerrero-Bote, Vicente P.; Halevi, Gali; Moya Anegón, Félix de
This study presents a thorough examination of gendered scholarly contributions and impact from 2003 to 2023, encompassing details on 212,631,585 authorships indexed in Scopus. The analysis unveils promising advancements towards gender equity, demonstrating an increase in contributions from both genders, which indicates the trend towards a progressive and inclusive environment. These findings challenge an initial perception of male prolificacy. The positive trends extend to female-led research teams, highlighting a correlation between gender balance and leadership. This evolving landscape is reflected in the convergence of male and female authorship participation over time. A decline in citable papers suggests a narrowing of the productivity gap, which challenges gender disparities in impact metrics and emphasizes the multifaceted nature of scholarly excellence across genders. Our data and gender classification method also enables us to look into the country level in order to characterize gender distribution locally. Contrary to conventional assumptions, developing countries are exhibiting a pronounced evolution in female authorship rates. In summary, the study underscores the positive trends towards gender equity, advocating for sustained efforts to promote diversity and foster nuanced understanding in academia.

<title>The spread of news deserts in Chile: The case of the Aysén region</title>

<description>The spread of news deserts in Chile: The case of the Aysén region
Rodríguez-Urra, Carlos; Trillo-Domínguez, Magdalena; Herrero-Solana, Víctor
News deserts are geographical contexts with an absence of media in the context of the global crisis of the press. This crisis weakens local citizenship by affecting democracy, social cohesion, and identity. The Aysén region is analysed as a pilot experience using a triangular quantitative and qualitative methodology. First, the research constructs a media map that identifies 20% of the territory at high risk of becoming a news desert, while another 40% is already one. The triggers are the lack of information plurality and digital infrastructure, and the economic difficulties of small media. Second, we combine a non-participant observation experience developed between January and February 2023 with case studies and semi-structured interviews that address the causes of the problem and point to constructive proposals, such as the creation of collaborative networks and the strengthening of mobile journalism and local identity. The work is focused on the Chilean region of Aysén as a case study but can be extended to other Latin American realities and countries with similar media weaknesses.; Los "desiertos informativos" son contextos geográficos con una ausencia de medios de comunicación en el marco de la crisis global de la prensa.

<title>Blockchain patent landscaping: An expert based methodology and search query</title>

<description>Blockchain patent landscaping: An expert based methodology and search query
Clarke, Nigel S.; Jürgens, Björn; Herrero Solana, Víctor
The present study is concerned with the emergence of Blockchain related technologies in terms of patenting activity. Blockchain has captured the attention of the public and research has intensified in this field over the last few years, making it a highly interesting topic of study for a patent analysis in order to obtain insight into the developments of this emerging technology. In this paper we present a unique methodology and exhaustive search strategy for identifying Blockchain patent documents by using a combination of specific keywords and patent classifications. This query was built in cooperation with subject matter experts of the European Patent Office (EPO). Our keyword set was then analysed by relevance and was prioritised. The set of specific relevant patent classifications was furthermore combined with keywords in order to exclude false positives. With our method- ology we present an exhaustive query for retrieving a highly relevant dataset of Blockchain related patents, extracted from the EPO databases that can be used for patent landscaping exercises or any other bibliometric analysis. In a case study we applied the search strategy to analyse worldwide Blockchain patenting from 2008 till 2018. The results are presented in this paper.

<title>Mapping the impact of papers on various status groups in excellencemapping.net: a new release of the excellence mapping tool based on citation and reader scores</title>

<description>Mapping the impact of papers on various status groups in excellencemapping.net: a new release of the excellence mapping tool based on citation and reader scores
Bornmann, Lutz; Moya Anegón, Félix de
In over five years, Bornmann, Stefaner, de Moya Anegon, and Mutz (2014b) and Bornmann,&#13;
Stefaner, de Moya Anegón, and Mutz (2014c, 2015) have published several releases&#13;
of the www.excellencemapping.net tool revealing (clusters of) excellent institutions worldwide&#13;
based on citation data. With the new release, a completely revised tool has been published.&#13;
It is not only based on citation data (bibliometrics), but also Mendeley data (altmetrics).&#13;
Thus, the institutional impact measurement of the tool has been expanded by&#13;
focusing on additional status groups besides researchers such as students and librarians.&#13;
Furthermore, the visualization of the data has been completely updated by improving the&#13;
operability for the user and including new features such as institutional profile pages. In&#13;
this paper, we describe the datasets for the current excellencemapping.net tool and the indicators&#13;
applied. Furthermore, the underlying statistics for the tool and the use of the web&#13;
application are explained.
