<title>Plaidoyers judiciaires et usages de l’État (Europe, XVIe-XIXe siècle)</title>
<link>https://hdl.handle.net/10481/104533</link>
Did the production of factums, lengthy legal pleadings setting out claims, change the relationship between litigants, men and women from all social backgrounds, and the justice system? How did this form of writing, using fictional narratives and discussing legal arguments, change the practical relationship between states and their subjects in matters of justice? The context of defences in civil and criminal proceedings in state jurisdictions of different sizes (the kingdoms of France and Spain, the German Empire, Venice) makes their social and political implications clear. Everywhere, legislation framed these legal pleadings, which were used by actors of different statuses attempting to influence the renewal of case law.

<title>¿Si fuera cierto? Espías y agentes en la frontera (siglos XVI-XVII)</title>

<description>¿Si fuera cierto? Espías y agentes en la frontera (siglos XVI-XVII)
Varriale, Gennaro
Frontier again? Today this word, so characteristic of Historiography, returned to all the international media. However, the “frontiers” of newspapers have little to do with the image by historians. In fact, the most important aspects for the scholars continue to be linked to contact, sometimes peaceful, sometimes conflictual, between the two sides of the frontier. The protagonists of our pages are not so different from those who move along the current borders: Syrian and Iraqi refugees with the Moriscos, who fled to the four corners of the world, the so-called mafias with the merchants of captives or the exiles of our time with the overthrown princes. If there is a common denominator of all frontiers, it is, without a doubt, that they are spaces where a multitude of information is generated. Discordant, stereotyped and perhaps absurd, news from the frontiers has a transcendental value for the society. For all these reasons, this volume aims to present the relationship between frontier and information during the early modern period with analytical approaches that examine the most controversial aspects and paying special attention to spies and informal agents.

<title>News from the epicentre. The flow of information about earthquakes in the hispanic monarchy (XVI–XVII centuries)</title>

<description>News from the epicentre. The flow of information about earthquakes in the hispanic monarchy (XVI–XVII centuries)
Varriale, Gennaro
For decades historians argued for the downfall of communication, when early modern societies were hit by a natural disaster. After all, earthquakes caused the destruction of infrastructure, which hindered the spread of news. Instead, the last investigations opened a new point of view about the political communication: every crisis was a catalyst for news. The book widens this reading through a comparative analysis of several earthquakes in the Hispanic Monarchy territories, from Asia to America.&#13;
However, the examination of communications provided in this volume is not an end in itself but is offered as a basis for reflection and to propose the notion that earthquakes trigger change in social and political dynamics. Earthquake-related crises exposed the underlying contradictions that the court of Madrid needed to address in the most effective way, and, if possible, swiftly.&#13;
Earthquakes not only destroyed buildings and infrastructure but also social norms. Urgency reduced the distance between interlocutors, to some extent blurring the boundaries of self-censorship. Tremors therefore offer a rare opportunity to observe the political and military crises faced by the Hispanic Monarchy, the global empire of the time.

<title>Mare Amaro. I corsari barbareschi sull’orizzonte italiano del Cinquecento</title>
<link>https://hdl.handle.net/10481/100077</link>
<description>Mare Amaro. I corsari barbareschi sull’orizzonte italiano del Cinquecento
Varriale, Gennaro
In the Sixteenth century, the Ottoman expansion causes an enormous tension in the Mediterranean area, where Italian peninsula is a principal link between West and Levant. The book focuses on Barbary corsairs’ activity through the eyes of outsiders: slaves, concubines, fugitives, spies, or eunuchs. Consequently, the first part examines the violence that is the hearth of piracy. The next aim is a specific analysis of Italian territories’ policy against the corsairs. The third considers the other side of the frontier with an especial emphasis on Constantinople, Northern African cities, and Levantine ports. The last section presents the connections amongst the coasts outlined by the corsairs.
