algunos otros colaboradores.; In this article about the book Wit and Wisdom in Morocco: a Study of Native
Proverbs, published by Finnish sociologist Edvard Westermarck in 1930, I examine a corpus
of animal proverbs. In my study of the local theories about animality, I analyze the
extent to which the book includes an ontography (writing about beings) and an epistemography
(writing about native points of view and forms of knowledge). Similarly, I examine
the extent to which Westermarck's work includes co-authorship with his main interlocutor
in Morocco, Sidi Abdessalam El-Baqqali, and other assistants.

de la mayor parte de los diferentes topónimos y microtopónimos.; This research focuses on the jurisdiction of the Axarquía of Málaga and the ṭā‘a
of Comares and of some of its villages at the end of the Middle Ages. The study of place
names and microtoponyms of pre-Arabic, Arabic and Castilian origin is useful for our objective
of recomposing the landscape and the medieval territory, with knowledge of the
geographical and constructive milestones also. To do so, documentation of demarcations
has been used, most of them inserted in the distributions of the lands of Comares, Málaga
and Vélez of the fifteenth century and in the apeos and repartimientos documents of several
villages of the Axarquía of the sixteenth century. The demarcation of the Axarquía of
Málaga is described, as well as that of the ṭā‘a of Comares, along with the denomination of
the mountains, rivers and even villages and watchtowers. We include the demarcation of
Almáchar, Benamargosa, Comares, Cútar, El Borge, Benaque, Macharaviaya, Olías and
the estates of Auta and Zuque, the lands of Lapuri and Montaeyl and the Dehesa del Rey to
offer a complete recomposition of the medieval landscape and territory, including the etymological
origin and meaning of most of the different toponyms and microtoponyms.

Ould Mohamed Baba, Ahmed Salem
awareness that can turn into a political, social, cultural or literary movement . The proclamation
of independence in several Arab countries led to the birth of literary trends. This
was the case in Mauritania in the 1960s when, after gaining its independence, a poetic
movement called Ŷīl al-istiqlāl (Generation of Independence) emerged. The poets who
witnessed the birth and early years of the new state became aware of the need to renew
poetry in order to initiate the Mauritanian literary nahḍa. In this article we outline the main
characteristics of the group of poets known as Ŷīl al-istiqlāl through the biographies and
sample poems of five poets, and also discuss the stylistic differences that can be observed
within this Generation.

exchange between the Islamic East and West by exploring the journey made by Ibn ʻῙsā l-
Balawῑ, a living document in which important intellectual ties can be perceived through the
relationships between scholars of the Islamic West and East. We highlight the aspects that
had a clear impact on the prosperity of the cultural and intellectual life of the fourteenth
century. We look closely at the prominent role of the cultural centres visited by the author,
identifying the most important intellectual and educational institutions, their sheikhs and
teachers and the role they played in the dissemination of scientific thought. We identify the
figures that predominated in these centres, shedding light on the sources of knowledge and
books used in teaching, as well as the selection of the scientific and literary works produced
by Eastern elites for transmission to the Islamic West and vice versa. Attention is
also given to the author’s interest in the Sufi movement and its role in the cultural and spiritual
life of the time.

Dialect variation across generations in Berkane (North-Eastern Morocco): the case of interdental fricatives
Guerrero, Jairo
The aim of the present paper is to investigate intergenerational variation in the
realization of interdental fricatives among speakers of Berkani Arabic, a variety spoken in
north-eastern Morocco. Our survey is based on data gathered during fieldwork in the city
of Berkane in December 2019. It is well known that, unlike mainstream Moroccan dialects,
some varieties in the far north-east have retained old interdental fricatives to this day.
Yet it seems that these phonemes are slowly fading or have already disappeared in some of
the aforementioned vernaculars. This is the case, for instance, in the western division of
the Huwwāṛa tribe and in the city of Oujda, respectively. As regards the city of Berkane, a
preliminary analysis of our data indicates an almost complete loss of the voiceless interdental
/ṯ/ and the voiced interdental /ḏ/. Conversely, instances displaying a voiced pharyngealized
/ḏ̣/ are abundant in the speech of our informants, even if this sound is seemingly
in free variation with its dental counterpart /ḍ/. Interestingly, this phonetic variation seems
to be related to the age of the speaker. Thus, the number of occurrences of /ḏ̣/ is higher
among middle-aged and older individuals. Such a finding could be indicative of the regression
of /ḏ̣/ in the speech of young Berkanis, which may be due to a process of convergence
towards the mainstream varieties of Moroccan Arabic. The abandonment of other local
