La pobreza en la España finisecular Solana Ruiz, José Luis En este artículo se ofrece una panorámica sobre la pobreza en la España de fin de siglo, relacionándola con la política social, el trabajo social y los servicios sociales. El análisis atiende al hecho diferencial de las distintas Comunidades Autónomas, que configuran la nación española, y al contexto de la Unión Europea, donde nuestro país se halla cada vez más integrado. Se comienza realizando un recorrido evolutivo por la pobreza y la desigualdad económica en España, desde los años setenta hasta la década de los noventa. Posteriormente, se atiende a su extensión (cuantificación de las tasas de pobreza), su distribución territorial y su intensidad (grados y niveles de pobreza). El artículo finaliza refiriéndose a algunas de las políticas sociales existentes en nuestro país, para combatir la pobreza, así como a algunas de las funciones ejercidas por el sistema de servicios sociales y el trabajo social en este combate.; This article offers a panoramic view of the poverty in the Spain of this century’s end, relating it with social politics, social work and social services. The analysis looks to the differential fact of the Autonomous Communities that configure the Spanish Nation, and to the context of the European Union, into which our country is every day more integrated. It begins by carrying out an evolutionary journey through the poverty and the economic inequality in Spain, from the 70's through the 90's. Later, the extension of poverty (quantification of the rates of poverty), its territorial distribution, and its intensity (degrees and levels of poverty) are considered. The paper concludes referring to some of the current social politics in our country combating poverty, as well as some of the functions exercised by the system of social services and social work.

Resolviendo la salud. Los gitanos catalanes Lagunas Arias, David El proceso de salud, enfermedad y atención es universal, opera en toda sociedad y consta no sólo de representaciones y prácticas, sino de saberes particulares para hacer frente a las angustias y sufrimientos. Mi tentativa es mostrar los conceptos, conocimientos y representaciones de los grupos gitanos, objeto del análisis antropológico. En este caso, tomo como referente a un grupo de gitanos catalanes, autodenominados calós, de Mataró (Barcelona), para explicitar su visión particular acerca de la salud y la enfermedad, así como su gestión ante el aparato asistencial.; The process of health, illness and medical attention is universal, it operates in all societies and it consists not only of representations and practices, but also of particular knowledge used to combat anxiety and suffering. Here I describe the concepts, knowledge, and representations of gypsy groups as an object of anthropological analysis. In this case, I take as referent a group of catalan Gypsies, self designated Calós, from Mataró (Barcelona). I explain their particular vision of health and illness, as well as their views on the health assistance institution.

Acerca de la fotografía etnográfica Brisset Martín, Demetrio E. Las imágenes icónicas, vistas desde la antropología, ofrecen un vasto campo semántico para ayudar a comprender mejor nuestras culturas. Aquí nos centraremos en las relaciones entre imágenes fotográficas y conocimiento antropológico, desde sus respectivos orígenes hasta las teorizaciones actuales. Y se plantearán algunos problemas que giran en torno de la fotografía específicamente etnográfica. Este género de comunicación visual, que comparte el carácter representativo de la foto con el simbólico de la cultura, será abordado desde diversas perspectivas, concluyendo con ciertas referencias a la obra de E. S. Curtis y la propia práctica del autor.; Iconic images, looked at from an anthropological standpoint, offer a vast semantic field to help better understand our cultures. Here we will focus attention on the relationships between photographic images and anthropological knowledge, from their respective origins up to current ideologies. And we will think about some problems that refer specifically to ethnographic photography. This kind of visual communication, that shares the representative character of picture with the symbolic aspect of culture, will be approached from diverse perspectives, concluding with some references to E. S. Curtis' work and the author's own practice.

Desesperación y búsquedas. La antropología social y el (des)encuentro con la ciencia Anta Félez, José Luis El último debate posmoderno ha planteado una crisis en la manera de ver las cosas, donde parece afirmar que con anterioridad sólo había una firme creencia en la Ciencia. En este trabajo el autor aborda cómo ha sido esa búsqueda, a veces desesperada, con respecto a lo científico y cómo desde hace muchas décadas atrás se discutía, a la vez que se ponían las bases, para llegar a una crítica apasionada de qué era y no científico en las ciencias sociales. A la vez se muestra cómo el debate en las ciencias físicas y naturales influía en el debate interior de la antropología social, en concreto, y de las ciencias sociales, en general. Observando, en consecuencia, que ni todo es banalidad en las ciencias sociales, ni todo simple ideología en la ciencia.; The recent postmodern debate outlines a crisis in the way of seeing things, where it seems to affirm that previously there was only a firm belief in Science. In this work the author discusses the search that has been conducted, at times desperate, with respect to the scientific, and how, after the many decades of discussion that went on to become conceptual foundations, it arrived at a passionate critique of what was and wasn´t scientific in the social sciences. At the same time it is shown that the debate in physical and natural sciences had an influence in the interior debate of social anthropology in particular, and social sciences in general. We notice, in consequence, that everything is neither banal in social sciences nor simple ideology in science.
