dirigentes han escenificado en las últimas décadas.; My article analyzes the literary geopolitics of El cuarto mundo
(1988), the third novel by Chilean writer Diamela Eltit. I approach
the various operations that Eltit carries out –from the radicalization
of disease to the transformation of the sick and monstrous body– as
counter-offensives that reconcile the poles of the aesthetic-political
vector. I read El cuarto mundo as a turn in Eltit’s poetics, one situated
in a regional discussion that questions the role of literature and its
politicity by going beyond allegory and the figuration of Chile as an
aesthetic-political sign. I examine Eltit’s careful reading of the new
global order and her understanding of literary authorship as an infirmity in the face of the ruling class’s abandonment of literary pursuits
in recent decades.

cuerpo – territorio – texto.; Drawing on the conceptualizations of the in-mundo (Andermann)
and the cosmo-agony (Galindo), this article explores a series of literary and artistic expressions that connect the pathological imaginary
of the human body with the ecological crisis. It deals with the strategies of codification of illness that are displayed in texts by Verónica
Gerber and Lina Meruane, and that are also echoed in recent artistic
production in Latin America. Placed in the specific context of the productive areas of the extractivist system, I suggest that the works analyzed here use illness as a metaphor for environmental degradation
by establishing a parallel between body – territory – text.
The Disease and the Hero: Representations of Belgrano’s and Bolívar’s Hidden and Public SyphilisGonzález Espitia, Juan Carloshttps://hdl.handle.net/10481/664202021-06-15T18:24:14ZThe Disease and the Hero: Representations of Belgrano’s and Bolívar’s Hidden and Public Syphilis
González Espitia, Juan Carlos
This essay explores discourses of disease, specifically syphilis, linked
to two defining figures of Latin American independence: Manuel Belgrano and Simón Bolívar. It examines the construction of discursive
myths and their relation to political and societal shifts; the manner in
which different representations of the disease serve as tools of mythification in the pursuit of cohesion-seeking narratives for their countries; and how mythification is continuously reshaped and at a
constant risk of failure, particularly when the understanding of these
diseases is adjusted as a result of scientific changes. It concludes by
showing how the tension between extolment and debasement in
terms of this venereal disease ultimately results in a further rooted
mythical understanding of the two independence heroes.; Este ensayo estudia los discursos de la enfermedad, específicamente

impacientes.; In this essay the author traces, through canonical and contemporary
writings of disease, the historical emergence of a new political actor who
intervenes both in the local and the global field: that of the ill who mistrusts conjectural diagnosis and doubtful, ineffectual, treatments; of the
diseased who demands explanations and seeks second opinions; of
those who study their own clinical cases and claim to be attended and
taken care of individually but also at large, elevating their human right
to healthcare as one conferred, both within and without the nation, by
the status of “biological citizenship”. Through the use of this concept,
formulated by scholars Nikolas Rose and Carlos Novak, and dismissing
ideas recently proposed by Giorgio Agamben, Meruane values the current disobedient but informed activism of the impatient.
