The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb−1, collected by the ATLAS detector in 2012 at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Events containing two leptons and one central b-jet are selected. The W t signal is separated from the backgrounds using boosted decision trees, each of which combines a number of discriminating variables into one classifier. Production of W t events is observed with a significance of 7.7σ. The cross-section is extracted in a profile likelihood fit to the classifier output distributions. The W t cross-section, inclusive of decay modes, is measured to be 23.0 ± 1.3(stat.) + 3.2 − 3.5 (syst.)±1.1(lumi.) pb. The measured cross-section is used to extract a value for the CKM matrix element |V tb | of 1.01 ± 0.10 and a lower limit of 0.80 at the 95% confidence level. The cross-section for the production of a top quark and a W boson is also measured in a fiducial acceptance requiring two leptons with p T > 25 GeV and |η| < 2.5, one jet with p T > 20 GeV and |η| < 2.5, and E miss T  > 20 GeV, including both W t and top-quark pair events as signal. The measured value of the fiducial cross-section is 0.85 ± 0.01(stat.) + 0.07 − 0.07 (syst.)±0.03(lumi.) pb.}, organization = {CERN for the very successful operation of the LHC}, organization = {ANPCyT, Argentina}, organization = {YerPhI, Armenia}, organization = {ARC, Australia}, organization = {BMWFW and FWF, Austria}, organization = {ANAS, Azerbaijan}, organization = {SSTC, Belarus}, organization = {CNPq and FAPESP, Brazil}, organization = {NSERC, NRC and CFI, Canada}, organization = {CONICYT, Chile}, organization = {CAS, MOST and NSFC, China}, organization = {COLCIENCIAS, Colombia}, organization = {MSMT CR, MPO CR and VSC CR, Czech Republic}, organization = {NRF, DNSRC and Lundbeck Foundation, Denmark}, organization = {IN2P3-CNRS, CEADSM/ IRFU, France}, organization = {GNSF, Georgia}, organization = {BMBF, HGF, and MPG, Germany}, organization = {GSRT, Greece}, organization = {RGC, Hong Kong SAR, China}, organization = {ISF, I-CORE and Benoziyo Center, Israel}, organization = {INFN, Italy}, organization = {MEXT and JSPS, Japan}, organization = {CNRST, Morocco}, organization = {FOM and NWO, Netherlands}, organization = {RCN, Norway}, organization = {MNiSW and NCN, Poland}, organization = {FCT, Portugal}, organization = {MNE/IFA, Romania}, organization = {MES of Russia and NRC KI, Russian Federation}, organization = {JINR}, organization = {MESTD, Serbia}, organization = {MSSR, Slovakia}, organization = {ARRS and MIZ S, Slovenia}, organization = {DST/NRF, South Africa}, organization = {MINECO, Spain}, organization = {SRC and Wallenberg Foundation, Sweden; SERI, SNSF and Cantons of Bern and Geneva, Switzerland; MOST, Taiwan; TAEK, Turkey}, organization = {STFC, United Kingdom}, organization = {DOE and NSF, United States of America}, organization = {Individual groups and members have received support from BCKDF, the Canada Council, CANARIE, CRC, Compute Canada, FQRNT, and the Ontario Innovation Trust, Canada}, organization = {EPLANET, ERC, FP7, Horizon 2020 and Marie Sk lodowska-Curie Actions, European Union}, organization = {Investissements d'Avenir Labex and Idex, ANR, Region Auvergne and Fondation Partager le Savoir, France}, organization = {DFG and AvH Foundation, Germany}, organization = {Herakleitos, Thales and Aristeia programmes co- nanced by EU-ESF and the Greek NSRF}, organization = {GIF and Minerva, Israel}, organization = {BRF, Norway}, organization = {the Royal Society and Leverhulme Trust, United Kingdom}, organization = {Crucial computing support from all WLCG partners is acknowledged gratefully, in particular from CERN and the ATLAS Tier-1 facilities at TRIUMF (Canada), NDGF (Denmark, Norway, Sweden), CC-IN2P3 (France), KIT/GridKA (Germany), INFN-CNAF (Italy), NL-T1 (Netherlands), PIC (Spain), ASGC (Taiwan), RAL (U.K.) and BNL (U.S.A.) and in the Tier-2 facilities worldwide}, publisher = {Springer}, keywords = {Hadron-Hadron scattering}, keywords = {Top physics}, title = {Measurement of the production cross-section of a single top quark in association with a W boson at 8TeV with the ATLAS experiment}, doi = {10.1007/JHEP01(2016)064}, author = {Aad, G. and Aguilar Saavedra, Juan Antonio and Atlas Collaboration, /}, }
