Diachronically, Afro-Hispanic varieties are iden-tified as the epicenter of the phenomenon, with the institution of slavery recognized as the primary triggering factor, as suggested by certain nineteenth-century fiction genres. Since 1850, Cuba has been a common literary setting for the use of su mercedas a form of address used by black servants when addressing their masters. This form of address is no longer in use in Cuba, and its development before disappearing is unknown. To a large extent, this lack of information is due to the documentary deficit for the Cuban enclave during a crucial evolutionary period in the linguistic history of Latin America: the late colonial period (1770-c.1845, Zimmermann, 2012).
