en la novela The Difference Engine (1990) de
William Gibson y Bruce Sterling. Tras una exposición
inicial de las principales características de las
obras ucrónicas, se profundizará en las nociones
paradójicas de necesidad y contigencia junto con
el factor de la agencia humana, prestando especial
atención a las propuestas de Kathleen Singles en su
libro Alternate History: Playing with Necessity and
Contingency (2013). El tercer y último apartado del
artículo se centrará en el análisis de The Difference
Engine, que partirá de la tesis de Singles y de las
ideas presentadas por otros académicos como
Herbert Sussman y Nicholas Spencer, quienes ya
habían discutido previamente la presencia de estos
conceptos en la novela.},

manifestations of the necessity/contingency
dichotomy in William Gibson and Bruce Sterling’s
novel The Difference Engine (1990). After an
initial introduction to the main characteristics
of alternate history works, we will delve into the
paradoxical notions of necessity and contingency
along with the human agency factor, paying
particular attention to the Kathleen Singles’
proposals in her book Alternate History: Playing
with Necessity and Contingency (2013). The third
and last section will focus on the analysis of The
Difference Engine, which will draw from Singles’
thesis and the ideas introduced by other scholars
such as Herbert Sussman and Nicholas Spencer,
who had already discussed the presence of these
concepts in the novel.},
