abstract = {Este artículo aborda el papel desempeñado por
la ucronía en el teatro español del siglo XIX. En
ese siglo se vivieron en España con ansiedad
los problemas para construir la nación a causa
de la inestabilidad social y política. Dentro del
liberalismo se buscaron las causas de aquel fracaso
en el pasado. Se idealizó la Edad Media, como
una época de libertad, truncada por la intolerancia
religiosa y el absolutismo político de la Edad
Moderna. El teatro en aquella centuria fue uno de
los lugares principales de ocio, pero también de
educación de la gente. Allí se exhibió un discurso
liberal a partir de obras históricas. Muchas de ellas
miraron hacia el pasado y sugirieron una historia
alternativa donde se superaban los errores del
desarrollo histórico del país.},

Within the liberalism causes of that failure were
looked for in the past. Middle Ages were idealized
as a period of freedom, broken by the religious
intolerance and the political absolutism. Theatre in
that century was one of the main places to leisure,
but also to educate people. A liberal speech was
displayed there from the historical plays. Many
of them looked backward to the past, suggesting
an alternate history where loads of mistakes
throughout the historical development of the
country were overcome.},
