abstract = {Los puentes colgantes se introdujeron en España en la década de 1840, llegándose a construir
alrededor de una docena por todo el país. La tipología no gozó posteriormente de la aceptación de los
ingenieros españoles, quedando esos primeros ejemplares como referencias únicas. Puentes problemáticos
con demasiada frecuencia, casi todos terminarían por ser sustituidos por otros de diferente tipología. Pero
aunque de la mayoría de ellos no quedan testimonios físicos, mientras estuvieron en servicio constituyeron
realizaciones muy significativas para la ingeniería civil y verdaderos hitos en el paisaje que todavía perviven
en la memoria popular. Con este artículo se pretende rescatar del olvido a uno de ellos, el de Mengíbar
(Jaén), por el que durante 85 años (de 1845 a 1930) cruzaba el Guadalquivir la importante carretera de
Bailén a Granada. A partir de la documentación custodiada en diferentes archivos españoles se ha podido
reconstruir la historia de su proceso de diseño y construcción, que se completa con la narración de los
acontecimientos más destacados del periodo de servicio de esta singular obra de ingeniería.},
abstract = {Suspension bridges were introduced in the 1840s in Spain and around a dozen were built all over the
country. This type of bridge construction was not pursued by Spanish engineers and these first examples
remain as the only references. These bridges frequently presented problems and almost all of them were
eventually replaced by other types of bridge. While the majority of these bridges are no longer standing, they
were seen as very significant civil engineering accomplishments in their day and as landmarks that still remain
in the collective memory. This article wishes to restore the memory of one of these bridges, the Mengibar
bridge (Jaen) that for 85 years (from 1845 to 1930) carried the Bailen to Granada road over the River
Guadalquivir. The history of the design and building process has been reconstructed from documents held in
various Spanish archives and a description is given of the most outstanding events during the life of this
singular engineering work.},
