abstract = {Existe un elemento que relaciona lugares tan distantes como el barrio del SoHo en Nueva
York, una aldea Dogón en Mali o el barrio Fígares en Granada: todos deben su imagen a la
escalera. Por diferentes motivos y, asociado a viviendas de tipología muy diversa, el espacio
público participa de las escaleras domésticas dotando a estos fragmentos urbanos de un
carácter muy particular que perdura en la memoria de sus habitantes y pasa a formar parte
del imaginario colectivo.
En 1975 Álvaro Siza comenzó la construcción de un conjunto de viviendas sociales en el
barrio de Bouça en Oporto, proyecto suspendido temporalmente que pudo completarse
treinta años después. En él reinterpretó elementos arquitectónicos tradicionales locales
incorporándolos a la nueva propuesta de una manera natural y contemporánea. La escalera
se convirtió en un elemento esencial para el funcionamiento de estas viviendas, pero su
presencia trasciende este hecho impregnando de manera irremediable el entorno cercano.},

in Mali or the Fígares neighbourhood in Granada: all of which owe their image to the staircase. For
different reasons and, associated with houses of a very diverse typology, the public space participates in the
domestic staircases, giving these urban fragments a very particular character that remains in the memory of
its inhabitants and becomes part of the collective imagination.
In 1975 Álvaro Siza began the construction of a group of social housing in the Bouça neighbourhood of
Porto, a suspended project that could be completed thirty years later. In it he reinterpreted traditional local
architectural elements incorporating them into the new proposal in a natural and contemporary way. The
staircase became an essential element for the operation of these houses, but its presence transcends this fact,
irreparably permeating the surrounding environment.},
