The measurement is performed using 139 fb−1 of LHC proton–proton collision data at √ s = 13 TeV taken in Run 2 by the ATLAS detector. Charged pions originating from τ -lepton decays are used to provide a sample of high-pT isolated particles, where the composition is known, to test an energy regime that has not previously been probed by in situ single-particle measurements. The calorimeter response to single-pions is observed to be overestimated by ∼2% across a large part of the pT spectrum in the central region and underestimated by ∼4% in the endcaps in the ATLAS simulation. The uncertainties in the measurements are 1% for 15 < pT < 185 GeV in the central region. To investigate the source of the discrepancies, thewidth of the distribution of the ratio of calorimeter energy to track momentum, the energies per layer and response in the hadronic calorimeter are also compared between data and simulation.}, organization = {ANPCyT}, organization = {YerPhI, Armenia}, organization = {Australian Research Council}, organization = {BMWFW, Austria Austrian Science Fund (FWF)}, organization = {Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS)}, organization = {SSTC, Belarus}, organization = {Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Tecnologico (CNPQ) Fundacao de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Sao Paulo (FAPESP)}, organization = {Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) NRC, Canada Canada Foundation for Innovation}, organization = {CERN}, organization = {ANID, Chile}, organization = {Chinese Academy of Sciences Ministry of Science and Technology, China National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC)}, organization = {Minciencias, Colombia}, organization = {Ministry of Education, Youth & Sports - Czech Republic Czech Republic Government Czech Republic Government}, organization = {DNRF, Denmark Danish Natural Science Research Council}, organization = {Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) CEA-DRF/IRFU, France}, organization = {SRNSFG, Georgia}, organization = {Federal Ministry of Education & Research (BMBF)}, organization = {HGF, Germany Max Planck Society}, organization = {GSRI, Greece}, organization = {RGC, China Hong Kong SAR, China}, organization = {Israel Science Foundation Benoziyo Center, Israel}, organization = {Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN)}, organization = {Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan (MEXT) Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan (MEXT) Japan Society for the Promotion of Science}, organization = {CNRST, Morocco}, organization = {Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) Netherlands Government}, organization = {RCN, Norway}, organization = {MEiN, Poland}, organization = {Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology European Commission}, organization = {MNE/IFA, Romania}, organization = {JINR}, organization = {Russian Federation}, organization = {Ministry of Education, Science & Technological Development, Serbia}, organization = {MSSR, Slovakia}, organization = {Slovenian Research Agency - Slovenia MIZS, Slovenia}, organization = {DSI/NRF, South Africa}, organization = {Spanish Government}, organization = {SRC, Sweden Wallenberg Foundation, Sweden}, organization = {SERI, Switzerland Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) Canton of Bern, Switzerland Canton of Geneva, Switzerland}, organization = {Ministry of Science and Technology, Taiwan}, organization = {Ministry of Energy & Natural Resources - Turkey}, organization = {UK Research & Innovation (UKRI)}, organization = {Science & Technology Facilities Council (STFC)}, organization = {United States Department of Energy (DOE)}, organization = {National Science Foundation (NSF)}, organization = {BCKDF, Canada CANARIE, Canada Compute Canada, Canada CRC, Canada}, organization = {COST, European Union European Research Council (ERC) ERDF, European Union Horizon 2020, European Union}, organization = {French National Research Agency (ANR)}, organization = {German Research Foundation (DFG) Alexander von Humboldt Foundation}, organization = {Herakleitos programme Thales Group Aristeia programme EU-ESF, Greece Greek NSRF, Greece}, organization = {BSF-NSF, Israel German-Israeli Foundation for Scientific Research and Development}, organization = {Norwegian Financial Mechanism 2014-2021, Norway}, organization = {NCN, Poland Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA)}, organization = {La Caixa Banking Foundation, Spain CERCA Programme Generalitat de Catalunya, Spain PROMETEO Programme Generalitat Valenciana, Spain GenT Programme Generalitat Valenciana, Spain}, organization = {Goran Gustafssons Stiftelse, Sweden}, organization = {Royal Society of London}, organization = {Leverhulme Trust}, publisher = {Springer}, title = {Measurement of the energy response of the ATLAS calorimeter to charged pions from W± → τ ± (→ π ± ντ )ντ events in Run 2 data}, doi = {10.1140/epjc/s10052-022-10117-2}, author = {Aad, G. and Aguilar Saavedra, Juan Antonio and Rodríguez Chala, Mikael and Atlas Collaboration}, }
