abstract = {La comunidad sefardí de Nueva Amsterdam (actual Nueva York), establecida a mediados del siglo XVIII, albergó el primer núcleo hispanófono de la Norteamérica anglosajona. Su dialecto castellano, de igual forma que otros similares hablados por sefardíes en los restantes establecimientos ingleses de la América septentrional, subsistió hasta bien entrado el siglo XIX, en que desaparece, pero no sin dejar huellas perdurables. Mejor suerte corrió en esas comunidades judías el español actual (y alternativamente el portugués), aunque circunscrito a un plano cultural, e incluso litúrgico. Y de este modo, compartió con el hebreo tal rango por hallarse escritas en ambas lenguas algunos de los libros más emblemáticos de uso en sinagogas y escuelas, y vincularse a aquellas las manifestaciones más relevantes de la cultura sefardí.},
abstract = {The Sephardic community of New Amsterdam (today’s New York), established in the middle of the XVIIIth century, provided accomodation for the first group of Spanishspeakers of North America. It is important to note that they retained their Spanish dialect till the very end of the XIXth century, in which it disappeared in spite of leaving an indelible trace. However the Spanish language did not undergo the same fate in those Jewish communities, and it was well preserved although confined principally to a cultural level. And it even shared with Hebrew the status of liturgical language, provided that the most emblematic books used at synagogues and schools were written in those languages, and the most relevant trends of the Sephardic culture were closely related to them.},
