abstract = {Este artículo refiere a las religiones afrobrasileñas en el Río de la Plata. Los practicantes del umbanda, originado en 1920 en el sureste de Brasil, se han expandido de noreste al sureste de Brasil, hasta ingresar a Uruguay y Argentina. Este artículo busca analizar las prácticas rituales del umbanda y quimbanda: las características del panteón de divinidades o seres sobrenaturales, y de sus seguidores. Su doctrina, ritos y ceremonias son estudiados, considerando el proceso de expansión de este grupo religioso en la zona. Se brinda un análisis detallado del culto, teniendo en cuenta su teología, los ritos de iniciación y la forma en que se lleva a cabo el proselitismo. Se exponen los templos, sacerdocio, jerarquías y ritos; y finalmente se presentan los cantos y los días festivos. El motivo esencial que mueve este escrito es describir sistemáticamente el conocimiento actualmente disponible referido a este tipo de culto.},
abstract = {The article deals with Afro-Brazilian religions in Rio de la Plata. Practitioners of the Umbanda, which originated in the 1920s in south-eastern Brazil, had spread from north-eastern to south-eastern Brazil, and into Uruguay and Argentina. This article aims at analysing ritual performances of Umbanda and Quimbanda, the pantheon's characters and of their followers. Their doctrine, rites and ceremonies are studied, considering the expansion process of the religious group in the zone. A detailed analysis of the cult, taking into consideration their theology, the initiation rites, and the way proselytism is developed. The Temple, priesthood, hierarchies, rites and sacrifices are examined; finally, chants and religious days are given. The raison d'être of this essay is to describe systematically all the knowledge we have today related to this kind of cult.},
