These gave rise to a unique culture with characteristic repertoires, festivals and ceremonies. Relations between al-Andalus (Moorish Spain) and the middle Niger River valley were frequent throughout the Middle Ages and early Modern era. Interesting sonorous landscapes thus appear in the music and festivals of this area.
