abstract = {El problema de la limpieza de sangre en sí mismo no puede justificar la compleja situación
que atravesó la Compañía a finales del XVI, ni mucho menos se puede defender que se debió a
la actuación de un grupo de jesuitas de origen judeoconverso, que actuaron con conciencia de su
genealogía. El asunto fue mucho más complejo: la Compañía de Jesús durante el generalato de
Mercuriano y sobre todo de Aquaviva se esforzó en desarrollar sus propios principios y fijar la
identidad, que la iba a caracterizar durante su historia, frente a las presiones para someterla que le
ejercían los grupos de poder dirigentes de las dos grandes instituciones de la época con vocación
universal: la Monarquía hispana y la Iglesia Católica. En esta pugna, que estuvo a punto de partir en
dos a la Compañía, la cuestión de los “expedientes de limpieza de sangre” constituyeron una de las
manifestaciones representativas de los ideales de las elites castellanas que organizaron la Monarquía
hispana (contrario a lo que defendía la Iglesia de Roma), que justificaban su actuación política en
un catolicismo hispano (castellano).},
abstract = {The matter of racial purity itself can not justify the complex situation suffered by the Society
at the end of the XVI century, not even defendable because of the acting of a group of Jesuits with
Jewish conversion origin. The issue was more complicated: the Jesuits Society made an effort,
during Mercuriano and above all Aquaviva generalships, for developing its own principles and
fixing its identity that would characterise all its history against the pressure to be submitted by
the leading power groups of the two great institutions of the era, the Spanish Monarchy and the
Catholic Church. In this fighting, which could lead to divide the Society, the issue of limpieza de
sangre inquiries were one of the characteristic manifestations of the ideals of Castilian elites who
organised the Spanish Monarchy (opposing what the Roman Church defended) whom justified their
political action in a Spanish catholicism.},
