abstract = {En esta tesis doctoral se describe la situación actual de la interpretación sanitaria en La Meca y Medina (Reino de la Arabia Saudí) durante la Peregrinación Mayor. Millones de peregrinos visitan anualmente esas ciudades: la mayoría son ancianos, provienen de todos los rincones del mundo, desconocen total o parcialmente la lengua árabe y en ocasiones portan enfermedades contagiosas. Además, los ritos y el clima son físicamente exigentes. Por todo ello, la Peregrinación Mayor genera una enorme demanda de interpretación sanitaria. Para describir este fenómeno singular se emplea la metodología de los estudios de caso. Se realizaron entrevistas semiestructuradas sobre el terreno a una muestra representativa de 77 personas (personal administrativo y sanitario e intérpretes) en 8 hospitales y 2 establecimientos de gestión. Por último, se formulan recomendaciones para mejorar los servicios de interpretación en los hospitales durante la Peregrinación Mayor.},
abstract = {This doctoral thesis describes the current situation of the interpretation of health care services in Mecca and Medina (In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) during the main pilgrimage season (the Hajj). Millions of pilgrims visit both of these cites each year, the majority are elderly people who come from all over the world and they lack partial or complete knowledge of Arabic. Occasionally they even carry some contagious diseases. Furthermore, the rituals and the weather are physically demanding. As a consequence, the Hajj requires a heavy demand on health care interpretation. We used the case study methodology in order to describe this phenomenon. Semi-structured interviews were conducted in the field to a representative sample of seventy-seven people (administrative and health care staff as well as interpreters) in eight hospitals and two pilgrimage management associations. Finally, we propose recommendations in order to improve health care interpreting services in the hospitals during the Hajj.},
