Their credit and mercantile activity extended to the royal court, where they stood out as financiers, especially during the time of John I of Aragon and his widow, Violant de Bar, overlord of the aljama. The family had their own synagogue, and were both feared and respected by their coreligionists because of the royal protection they enjoyed. After the Disputation of Tortosa, the family members began to convert, culminating in 1416 with the baptism of Samuel (Gil), who was granted a knighthood, along with several of his sons. This article describes this entire history, based on abundant, largely unpublished archival sources.
