abstract = {La ciudad de Larache tuvo una importancia excepcional durante el Protectorado español en
Marruecos (19192-1956). La perla del Norte, como fue llamada en la literatura colonial, adquirió
tal relevancia en aquella época fundamentalmente gracias a su estratégica ubicación en la
desembocadura del río Lucus. La geografía política fue un factor clave para la ocupación de esta
plaza desde 1911. Larache era percibida como parte del legado expansionista en América y las
costas africanas, que la empresa colonial de Marruecos buscaba resucitar a toda costa por motivos
de la llamada política de prestigio que dominaba el imperialismo europeo en los albores del siglo
XX. En este estudio recuperamos el relato histórico de la Larache española para examinar la
credibilidad de la imagen producida sobre la ciudad en los medios coloniales, y arrojar luz sobre
el verdadero efecto civilizador del Protectorado en el espacio urbano marroquí.},
abstract = {The city of Larache had exceptional importance during the Spanish Protectorate in Morocco
(19192-1956). The pearl of the North, as it was called in colonial literature, acquired such
relevance at that time mainly thanks to its strategic location at the mouth of the Lucus River.
Political geography was a key factor for the occupation of this square since 1911. Larache was
perceived as part of the expansionist legacy in America and the African coasts, which the
Moroccan colonial enterprise sought to resurrect at all costs for reasons of the so-called policy of
prestige that dominated European imperialism at the dawn of the 20th century. In this study we
recover the historical account of Spanish Larache to examine the credibility of the image produced
about the city in colonial media and shed light on the true civilizing effect of the Protectorate in
the Moroccan urban space.},
