abstract = {Este ensayo considera la importancia de la actitud filo-masónica del influyente político portugués de la Ilustración, el Marqués de Pombal (1699–1782), a través del análisis de sus políticas urbanas y de las obras de arte y arquitectura creadas bajo su gobierno, la mayoría de ellas supervisadas por su amigo, el arquitecto y masón Carlos Mardel (1696–1763). A pesar del reciente crecimiento de la investigación sobre la historia de la masonería, sigue existiendo un prejuicio en el mundo académico en contra del estudio de las conexiones entre el arte y la masonería en Europa. Este prejuicio es más evidente en Italia, España y Portugal. En estos tres países, la masonería se estableció a principios del siglo XVIII, poco después de la fundación de la Gran Logia de Inglaterra. abstract = {This essay considers the significance of the philo-masonic attitude of the influential Portuguese Enlightenment politician, the Marquis of Pombal (1699–1782), through the analysis of his urban policies and of works of art and architecture created under his rule, most of them overseen by his friend, the architect and Freemason Carlos Mardel (1696–1763).1 Despite the recent growth in research on the history of Freemasonry, there remains a bias in the academic world against the study of connections between art and Freemasonry in Europe. This bias is most evident in Italy, Spain, and Portugal. In these three countries, Freemasonry was established in the early eighteenth century, soon after the founding of the Grand Lodge of England. The roots of the resistance to studying Freemasonry and the visual arts in southern Europe can be traced back to this period, when a papal bull of 1738 condemned the fraternal order.},
