The personero was the spokesperson and defender of the civic community in the ancient villages and cities of Castile and Andalusia. According to the jurisdictions, laws and timeless customs of the regioun, the personero was elected exclusively by the community. The community also maintained the right to impeach him if he didn't fulfill his duties. As representative of The Common Good, his presence was required in the town council and the courts of justice. Problems between neighbors, poverty, the quick administration of justice and critiques of powerful people were all a significant part of his work. The personero's role obligated him to be in almost constant opposition to the ambitions of the power-hoarding oligarchs.
