Las construcciones hechas con tierra cruda forman parte del patrimonio cultural de la humanidad y están relacionadas con las más profundas tradiciones de todo el mundo. El hombre, en la búsqueda de refugios, además de utilizar los relieves naturales, se ha encontrado con otros materiales que podrían permitir la construcción de su hábitat de manera deliberada. Su entorno le proporcionaba varios materiales para sus edificaciones; entre éstos estaba la tierra, que se presentaba en gran abundancia. Los refugios, que eran muy rudimentarios al principio, se fueron perfeccionando a medida que evolucionaban socialmente sus moradores. En ese momento el constructor dedicaba gran parte de su tiempo a seleccionar los materiales y a descubrir las formas arquitectónicas más adecuadas a ellos (NÉSTOR, 2002).
La arqueometría, como herramienta de estudios, puede ser una de las opciones para cambiar la visión errónea, que tienen algunos científicos, de la arquitectura de tierra y así mostrar su importancia dentro de las investigaciones al respecto.
