Las maestranzas de caballería en el siglo XVIII. Balance historiográfico

Abstract

Las Maestranzas de Caballería han sido hasta fechas relativamente recientes, bastante poco conocidas. En este artículo se hace una revisión de los estudios relativos a estas corporaciones con una doble finalidad: sacar del olvido algunas obras antiguas que, pese a su orientación, contienen información aprovechable y, sobre todo, analizar su significación social a la luz de los trabajos más recientes. Según éstos últimos las Maestranzas no representan sólo una reacción nobiliaria frente al ascenso de la burguesía, sino que son instituciones que sirven para articular la jerarquización interna de la nobleza, sin estar exentas de los mecanismos de movilidad social propios de la época.

The Equestrian Societies of Spanish Noblemen went largely unnoticed by historians until recently. In reviewing the existing studies of these societies the author’s objective is two-fold: first of all, certain ancient works containing some bits of valuable information are recovered from oblivion; and secondly, their social significance is examined in light of the most recent studies. Not only do the Maestranza societies represent the response of Spanish nobility to the rise of the bourgeoisie, but they also reflect the internal hierarchy of the nobility and reveal the mechanisms of social mobility characteristic of the 18th century.
