En el presente trabajo se ha estudiado la variabilidad genotipica existente en vicia faba para diferentes aspectos del metabolismo simbiótico, abordando también el efecto que sobre ellos presenta el nitrato utilizando diferentes regímenes de fertilización nítrica. el objeto de este estudio ha sido encontrar patrones de variabilidad que permitan identificar a) genotipos adecuados para ser utilizados como parentales en un programa de mejora; b) caracteres relacionados con la fijación de nitrógeno para los que fuera interesante seleccionar en esta especie y c) los posibles mecanismos del efecto inhibidor del nitrato sobre la fijación de nitrógeno en esta leguminosa. el germoplasma de v. faba utilizado mostró una extraordinaria variabilidad en cuanto a potencial de crecimiento, nodulacion, fijación de nitrógeno y capacidad para asimilar el amonio y fijar co2 en los nódulos, lo que permite pensar que la mejora de la fijación de nitrógeno es posible en esta especie.la masa nodular y las actividades glutamatosintasa y fosfoenolpiruvato carboxilasa de los nódulos aparecen como caracteres interesantes para los que se puede seleccionar en v. faba a fin de incrementar la fijación de nitrógeno.
