Cuestiones epistemológicas en antropología

Abstract

La antropología, en tanto que ciencia social, sitúa al mundo humano en el mismo plano físico que las ciencias naturales y ello pese al aparente giro que está dando hacia las ciencias humanas. Las ciencias sociales como la antropología entre otras, de invención reciente, han confundido los dos mundos entre los cuales el mundo humano se mueve: el natural y el cultural. Han fusionado estas dos realidades en una sola, la social, fusionando con ello todo aquello que concierne su estudio. En este sentido, la epistemología que subyace sus estudios conlleva también confusiones fundamentales, a partir de las cuales se impone un profundo cuestionamiento alrededor de dos ejes: la metodología y el propio concepto de cultura. En cuanto a la metodología, la confusión de las ciencias sociales se extiende hasta lo más profundo de su metodología, confundiendo lo cualitativo con lo cuantitativo, el método con la técnica. En cuanto al concepto de cultura, éste ha sido aceptado como genuinamente antropológico, olvidando lo que otras disciplinas como la filosofía han discutido a través de siglos de reflexión. La antropología ignora algunos siglos de tradición que han servido para acuñar, reflexionar y desarrollar la noción de cultura. La antropología, a pesar de abrazar conceptos e ideas desarrolladas por las ciencias humanas, sigue pretendiendo abarcarlo todo sobre la humanidad, erigiéndose ella como la disciplina central a partir de la cual las demás devienen satélites, usurpando aquello que otras disciplinas ya habían desarrollado antes. Sin embargo, parece mostrarse incapaz de reflexionar sobre lo que está haciendo y cómo lo está haciendo.

Anthropology, as a social science, places the human being on the same physical level as the natural sciences, in spite of the apparent turn towards the human sciences that is taking place. Recently invented social sciences, including anthropology among others, have confused the two worlds in which human beings move: the natural and the cultural. Social sciences have fused the two into the social world, thus fusing everything under their study. In this regard, the underlying epistemology implies fundamental confusions, beginning with a profound questioning of two aspects: methodology and the concept of culture itself. Methodologically, the confusion of the social sciences is far-reaching, confusing qualitative with quantitative, method with technique. The concept of culture has been accepted as genuinely anthropological, dismissing what other disciplines, like philosophy, have discovered through centuries of reflection. Anthropology ignores several centuries of tradition that have reflected on and developed the notion of culture. Anthropology, in spite of embracing concepts and ideas developed by the human sciences, still pretends to cover everything human, erecting itself as the central discipline from which all others grow, and usurping all that other disciplines had previously developed. However, it seems unable to reflect what it is doing and how it is doing it.
