Del patrimonio a la identidad. La sociedad civil como activadora patrimonial en la ciudad de Valencia

Abstract

Hasta hace poco, el Estado, primero, y el mercado, después, han sido los dos principales agentes patrimonializadores culturales. Recientemente, ha emergido con fuerza un nuevo agente patrimonializador: la sociedad civil o Tercer Sector. Ésta, a través de agrupaciones que pueden adoptar la forma bien de asociaciones, bien de colectivos y plataformas, ha emprendido una actividad de defensa del patrimonio, la cual en ocasiones entra en conflicto con los otros dos sectores. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar ese nuevo fenómeno social, así como también los conflictos que lo rodean, incidiendo especialmente en sus dimensiones simbólica e identitaria. De modo particular, nos centraremos en el caso de un barrio histórico de la ciudad de Valencia (España), el del Cabanyal.

Traditionally, the State and the market have been the main agents pushing for the preservation of cultural heritage. Recently, however, a new agent -so-called social civility or third sector- has taken up this task. Under the guise of a variety of associations and enterprises, civil society has become a new and powerful defender of cultural heritage. In the process, these three agents have come into conflict. The purpose of this paper is to analyse this new social phenomenon and the clashes it has generated. I focus on the symbolic and identity aspects, using as an example the case of the historic area in the city of Valencia (Spain), the "Cabanyal".
