Entre Oyá y Santa Teresa. El controvertido asunto del sincretismo en la santería

Abstract

El artículo resalta lo inadecuado de aplicar el término sincretismo a la religión afrocubana ocha o santería. Presentarla como el resultado de la mezcla de la religión yoruba y el catolicismo, denota cierta ideología y desvirtúa el verdadero carácter de la religión. También se pone de relieve la confluencia de intereses, incluidos los de los propios santeros, en caracterizar la santería como sincretizada con el catolicismo. Como contrapunto a esta aproximación, surge una corriente, todavía minoritaria, que retoma los orígenes africanos y niega el sincretismo con el catolicismo.

This article emphasizes the inadequacy of applying the term syncretism to the Afro-Cuban religion called Ocha or Santeria. Presenting it as the result of merging Yoruba religion with Catholicism denotes a certain ideology and misrepresents the true nature of the religion. It also stresses the convergence of interests, including those of santeros themselves, in showing Santeria as syncretized with Catholicism. As a counterpoint to this approach, there is a trend, still held by a minority, seeking to return its African origins and denying its syncretization with Catholicism.
