El gitano imaginario y la cristalización del mito

Abstract

Desde su llegada a Europa entre los siglos XIV y XV el imaginario de los gitanos ha sido monopolio exclusivo de artistas no gitanos. Retratando desde perspectivas opuestas aunque enfatizando en temas comunes, la historia del arte ha transmitido una imagen cambiante y marginal de esta minoría. Las transposiciones, materializadas en estereotipos positivos y negativos, han hecho de su imagen un recurso estético y pedagógico recurrente para los artistas. El objetivo de este trabajo es reconstruir la trayectoria del imaginario gitano en obras pictóricas de los últimos cinco siglos y reflexionar sobre la imagen del gitano como objeto del arte.

Since their arrival to Europe between 14th and 15th centuries the imagery of the gypsies has been exclusive monopoly of non-gypsy artist. Depicting the gypsy from opposing perspectives although emphasizing common topics, art history has transmitted a changing and marginal image of this minority. This transpositions materialized in positive and negative stereotypes, have made their image into an recurrent aesthetic and pedagogical resource for artists. In conclusion, the aim of this work is to reconstruct the imaginary gypsy's trajectory in pictorial works of the last five centuries and reflect on the image of the gypsy as object of art.
