Puertos e hinterland en el sur de España. Las clases mercantiles en el litoral andaluz en 1931

Abstract

Las áreas portuarias generan un denso y variado conjunto de negocios y profesiones. Funcionarios públicos, comerciantes, mayoristas y empresas privadas domiciliados en ellas cubren variados segmentos de actividad ellos ligados al objetivo común de asegurar y promover el tráfico portuario. En el sur de España, durante el primer tercio del siglo XX, catorce áreas portuarias de media y gran importancia configuraban un ambiente de gran interés para este tipo de análisis; un ambiente cuya estructura estudiamos en estas páginas en términos de escala y de diversificación de la clase mercantil y profesional como un conjunto interactivo. La configuración y distribución territorial del tejido empresarial en dichos entornos portuarios en 1931 pone en evidencia la considerable atracción que ejercían dichas áreas portuarias, que operaba estrechamente ligados a su entorno regional. No obstante esa atracción ejercida sobre ciertas actividades mercantiles, cabe pensar —por imperativos tal vez de la política económica ya entonces centenaria— que su efecto se viera reducido por una orientación muy acusada hacia el mercado interior, disminuyendo en proporción las actividades de exportación-importación. Dos tablas estadísticas incluidas en el texto detallan por primera vez la escala y la diversificación de dicho tejido socio-empresarial.

Port areas generate a dense and variegated set of businesses and professions. Public servants, traders, wholesalers and private companies located in it cover different segments of activity linked to the common objective. In the south of Spain during the first third of the twentieth century fourteen medium or large scale port areas offer an interesting environment for these approach; an environment whose structure in 1931 we study in these pages in terms of scale and diversification. The configuration and space distribution of the business fabric in such port environments shows a considerable attraction of these port areas, which operated closely linked to their regional environment. Although the Spanish ports showed a significant attraction for certain commercial activities, it is possible to think — by imperatives of economic policy already centennial — that its effect was reduced by a very strong orientation of the regional economy towards national market, reducing in proportion export-import activities. Two statistical tables included in the text detail for the first time the scale and diversification of this socio-business fabric.
