La fabricación de monumentos antiguos en la Era del turismo de masas

Abstract

A finales del siglo XIX el turismo comenzaba a desarrollarse en las ciudades que habían conservado sus edificios históricos. Tanto en Estados Unidos como en Europa comprendieron que, por un lado, era posible fabricar la antigüedad que atraía al visitante; y, por otro, que los turistas salían igual de satisfechos aunque sólo visitaran reconstrucciones o copias. La fabricación moderna de monumentos antiguos como medida de promoción urbana tiene una historia, y en este texto nos proponemos estudiar las bases de su origen, así como analizar diversos ejemplos de edificios reconstruidos en el mundo occidental desde finales del siglo XIX hasta 1970.

At the end of the nineteenth century modern tourism was beginning its development in cities where historic buildings had been preserved so far. This prompted the consciousness, both in Europe and the USA, on the possibility to artificially produce those features of the antiquity attractive for visitors and on the fact that tourists were equally pleased albeit knowing they were visiting copies or reproductions. This paper aims to study the particular history of the modern creation of ancient monuments as a sort of urban promotion, analyzing the bases of its origins and providing some examples of rebuilt monuments in western society from the end of the nineteenth century to 1970.
