La reconstrucción de Berlín, la búsqueda de una nueva identidad

Abstract

Fue en Berlín donde se dieron las soluciones más paradójicas y controvertidas, motivadas sin duda por la quirúrgica y traumática división de la ciudad en varios bloques primero, y en dos sectores después, con el levantamiento del muro en los tempranos años 60. A esto hemos de añadir que la recuperación del pasado histórico corrió pareja e indisolublemente unida a la recuperación económica. El espectacular desarrollo económico que alcanzó el país en los años 50, el llamado “milagro alemán”, fue decididamente el motor que promovió muchas de las intervenciones de restitución de los vacíos urbanos provocados por la guerra. Ahora bien, mientras este “milagro” afectaba a la zona occidental, el sector oriental azuzado por los logros económicos y desarrollistas de sus vecinos, desplegaba todo su repertorio y parafernalia para competir de igual a igual con sus vecinos. Y siempre la ciudad de Berlín como campo de pruebas y escaparate inmejorable, a uno y otro lado del muro, de todas sus estrategias. La herramienta elegida para su difusión fue, una vez más, la arquitectura. Pero no fue la única, ya que las artes visuales como el cine, la pintura, escultura, etc., ya durante el III Reicht habían demostrado su inestimable valía como instrumento propagandístico al servicio del poder. No obstante, la contundencia formal y visual de la arquitectura serviría de nuevo para reflejar, en ambos sectores, la nueva prosperidad, triunfante y optimista pero llena de clichés postmodernos y pastiches historicistas, que jalonaría, desde la división de Berlín, su controvertida reconstrucción.

However, the formal and visual forcefulness of architecture serve again to reflect, in both sectors, the new prosperity, triumphant and optimistic but full of clichés postmodern and historicist pastiche that made, from the division of Berlin, his controversial reconstruction.
