Cobertura de las editoriales científicas del Book citation index en ciencias sociales y humanidades: ¿la historia se repite?

Abstract

En 2010 Thomson lanzó un nuevo índice de citas dedicado a los libros: el Book citation index. Esta nueva base de datos ha abierto nuevas posibilidades para el análisis bibliométrico de campos como las humanidades y las ciencias sociales. Sin embargo debido a su juventud aún sabemos poco sobre su cobertura y especialmente de los editores científicos que se han tenido en cuenta en su elaboración. Se analiza la cobertura por países, idiomas, concentración editorial y una comparación con el producto español Scholarly publishers indicators (SPI), del CCHS/CSIC. Se concluye que tiene una orientación marcadamente anglosajona, gran concentración editorial y, para agravar la situación, ausencia de editores reputados.

In 2010 Thomson launched a new citation index devoted to books: the Book citation index. This new database has opened new possibilities for analyzing fields such as the Humanities and Social Sciences from a bibliometric point of view. However we still know little about their coverage and especially about the scientific publishers that have been taken into account in the construction of this citation database. In this paper we analyze the BKCI coverage: countries, languages, concentration of publishers and finally we compare the database with Scholarly publishers indicators (SPI), produced in Spain by CCHS/CSIC. The conclusion is that Thomson is making the same mistakes as before: a clear Anglo-Saxon bias, a large concentration of publishers and an absence of a number of reputable publishers.
