Las restauraciones arquitectónicas de Luis Menéndez-Pidal

Abstract

La tesis doctoral que recoge este libro es fruto de una profunda investigación sobre la trayectoria profesional de Luis Menéndez-Pidal uno de los arquitectos restauradores del patrimonio español monumental más destacados del siglo XX. Comenzó su actividad profesional nada más terminar sus estudios con la restauración de la Iglesia de Santa María la Real de Nieva y desde entonces no paró de asumir encargos hasta su fallecimiento en 1975. Durante estos 55 años mantuvo bajo su tutela los principales monumentos del noroeste de España en los que restauró cerca de 200 edificios en sus distintos cargos dentro de la Administración, pero fundamentalmente en su puesto de Arquitecto Conservador de Monumentos de la Primera Zona (1941-75), donde se englobaban las provincias de Asturias, León, Zamora, La Coruña, Lugo, Orense y Pontevedra. La tesis investiga cómo fueron sus restauraciones sobre estos monumentos, prestando especial interés a la Catedral y la Cámara Santa de Oviedo, las catedrales de Zamora, León, Santiago o Tuy, el prerrománico y románico asturiano, las murallas de Lugo, León y Astorga, o el monasterio de Guadalupe (Cáceres). Sus intervenciones fueron tantas y tan profundas que podemos afirmar, sin miedo a equivocarnos, que el paisaje monumental que actualmente puede contemplarse en este territorio es fruto de las interpretaciones personales que Menéndez-Pidal nos legó a través de sus restauraciones. El estudio de su obra es una herramienta inmejorable para acercarnos a la restauración monumental de este fundamental periodo histórico de la restauración arquitectónica en España.

The dissertation is the result of extensive research into the career of Luis Menéndez-Pidal, one of the Spanish Monumental Heritage architect restaurateurs most prominent during the twentieth century. He began his professional career (at the end of his studies) with the restoration of the Church of Santa María la Real de Nieva, and since then he never stopped of taking orders until his death in 1975. During these 55 years he kept under his tutelage the major monuments in the northwest of Spain, where he restored nearly 200 buildings at different positions within the Administration, but mainly in his post of Architect Conservator of Monuments of the First Zone (1941-1975 ). The First Zone encompassed the provinces of Asturias, León, Zamora, La Coruña, Lugo, Ourense and Pontevedra. The thesis investigates how were his restorations on these monuments, paying particular attention to the Cathedral and the Cámara Santa of Oviedo, the cathedrals of Zamora, Leon, Santiago or Tuy, Asturian Pre-Romanesque and Romanesque, the walls of Lugo, Leon and Astorga, and the monastery of Guadalupe (Cáceres). His interventions were so many and so deep that we can say, without fear of error, that the monumental landscape that currently can be seen in this area is the result of the personal interpretations of Menendez-Pidal. The study of his work is an excellent tool to approach the monumental restoration of this important historical period of architectural restoration in Spain.
