Familia publicanorum

Abstract

Dentro de los distintos significados del término familia que viene recogido en las distintas fuentes jurídicas y literarias romanas, encontramos la expresión familia publicanorum, fundamentalmente debido a ULPIANO y a GAYO, que nos muestra la idea de aquel grupo de personas que se unen para la realización de un fin común, esto es, todo lo que lleve implícito la actividad de los publicani. Dicho grupo social, que llegó a materializarse en forma de societas, creó en su interior una relación tan intensa que se hizo merecedora de la denominación de familia. En el seno de la misma, encontramos que sus miembros pueden tener distintas funciones y que, entre ellos, hay distintos grados de poder aunque a todos les una el simple hecho de formar parte de la familia publicanorum.

Within the different meanings of the term family that comes in various legal and literary Roman sources, the expression familia publicanorum is found, primarily because of ULPIAN and GAIUS. It shows us the idea of a group of people who join together to achieve a common goal, that is, all that is implicit in the activity of the publicani. This social grouping materialized in the form of societas, which created within it very intense relationship that deserved the name of family. Within it, we find that its members had different functions and, among them, there were different degrees of power although all of them were united by the simple fact of being part of the familia publicanorum.
