Ilegitimidad y abandono en la Granada del siglo XVIII: un establecimiento para partos expósitos ilegítimos

Abstract

En el año 1775 se crea en Granada una institución que tiene el cometido de asistir a todas aquellas mujeres obligadas a parir a sus hijos de forma clandestina, por ser éstos fruto de uniones ilegítimas. Tras dar a luz, las madres permanecían en el establecimiento hasta su recuperación, mientras que sus hijos, condenados a la exposición, eran abandonados en la Casa-Cuna de la ciudad. La fundación de esta institución obedece a la pretensión de acabar, o al menos reducir, el dantesco espectáculo de niños recién nacidos muertos, abandonados en plena calle por sus propias madres ante la amenaza de la deshonra. En este trabajo analizamos el funcionamiento de la fundación y sus resultados.

In the year 1775 an institution was founded in Granada whose purpose was to give assistance to all women who were obliged to give birth to illegitimate babies in secret. After giving birth, these mothers stayed here until they recovered and their children were handed over to the city’s Foundling Hospital. The founding of this institution was an attempt to put an end to or at least reduce the number of new-born babies who were left to die on the streets of Granada by their own mothers in order to avoid dishonour. In this study we examine the running of this establishment and its results.
